Amity School of Communication organizes a one day Science Communication Workshop on “Nuclear Energy”

Vigyan Prasar,Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India in collaboration with AmitySchool of Communication, AUUP organizeda one day Workshop on “Nuclear Energy – An Inevitable Option ” on August 26,2013 at Amity University Campus, Sector-125, Noida.

The objective ofthe workshop was to create better understanding of commercial energy generation,raise awareness on nuclear power and to remove myths and misconceptions aboutnuclear energy among the students of mass communication and journalism so thatthey can pass on this knowledge to the world at large and improve understandingof the nuclear energy sector by the general masses. The workshop helped themedia students to understand the 360 degree perspective on the various related issuesof science and technology.

Eminent personalities from the fieldof Nuclear Science who graced the occasion were Dr. Deoki Nandan, FormerScientist, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai; Mr. Nimish Kapoor, Principal Scientific Officer,Vigyan Prasar, DST, Govt. of India; Mr. Amritesh Srivastava, Manager,Corporate Communication & Media, NPCIL, Mumbai; Dr. W. Selvamurthy, President,Amity Science, Technology & Innovation Foundation (ASTIF) and Mr.Matiur Rahman, Science Film Maker.

Col R.K Dargan, Advisor , Amity School of Communication (ASCO) and Ms.Gauri Chakraborty, Associate Professor,Amity School of Communication (ASCO)was also present on the occasion.

Dr. Deoki Nandan, FormerScientist, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai said, “there arethirteen hundred branches of science and technology. Therefore, when you thinkof communicating in the area of science and technology there is no dearth ofinformation. As mass communicator one should not use yellow journalism but todo proper research and study before informing the masses on certain aspects ofscientific arena. This will help the journalists to remain as mass communicatorfor longer.”  Dr. Deoki Nandan alsoadded that there are various aspects of science which one needs to discover andpresent it to the masses in way which will help them to understand easily.         

While addressing the gathering, Dr. W. Selvamurthy, President, Amity Science, Technology &Innovation Foundation (ASTIF) averred that promotion of sciencecommunication is of utmost importance as the scientist’s works that are done inthe laboratories are to be communicated to the masses. That will help generalmasses of the country to understand technological and scientific developmentsthat are happening. It also helps in the military and economic development ofthe nation. Dr. W. Selvamurthy as ascientist predicted that in the near future the growth of India willincrease 8 to 9 percent due to the developments in science and technology.  

Mr. Nimish Kapoor, PrincipalScientific Officer, Vigyan Prasar, DST,Govt. of India while enlightening the students on the myths and rumors ofNuclear Power said, “Nuclear Energy is a clean and green energy source. Themisconceptions and myths of general masses are creating barriers to theaccelerated growth of our country. It has become necessary to educate the masscommunication and journalism students so that they in turn can make generalmasses aware of the positive aspects of nuclear power and energy.” 

The participants of the workshop interactedwith the scientists and cleared their doubts on various aspects of science andtechnology.

“Budhiya and Nuclear Energy”(animation film); Clearly Nuclear: Indian Nuclear Power Programme; Power Showerand Waste management & Earthquake Safewere the Documentary films’ screened on the workshop to educate theparticipants about the various nuances of nuclear power and energy. It helpedthe students of Amity School of Communicationto understand the positive aspects of nuclear power.

Writing assignmentsbased on interactions were given to the participating students during the ScienceCommunication Workshop. Approximately Sixty Five students from Amity School of Communication, Amity University UttarPradesh participated in the workshop.

The day long workshopprovided a holistic view of Nuclear power and energy to the participants.
