Celebration of Birthday of Shaheed Bhagat Singh
Bhagat Singh, a symbol of heroism, was born in a Sikh family in Layalpur,Punjab on September 28, 1907. He was a national hero who gave a new wave to therevolutionary movement in India. His only goal inlife was thedestruction ofBritish Empire.
Bhagat started his education in DAVSchool inLahore but was not able to complete his studies because he was highlydisturbedand influenced by the Jalianwala Bagh massacre at the age of 12. Hisdesire todrive British out from India became stronger and he joined the Non-CooperationMovementcalled by Gandhi Ji in 1921. The incidence of Chauri-Chaura in GorakhpurmadeBhagat violent and he decided to earn freedom with armed revolution ratherthannon-violence. He then joined the National College in Lahore, a center ofrevolutionaryactivities.
To spread message of revolution inPunjab,Bhagat formed a union of revolutionaries by the name ‘Naujavan BharatSabha’and gave a call for mass mobilization. In 1928, he went to Delhi toattend ameeting of revolutionaries’ and there he came in contact withChandrashekharAzad. With a common aim to establish republic in India they bothformed‘Hindustan SamajvadiPrajatantra Sangha’. There were protests against ofSimonCommission visit to India and in this protest Lala Lajpat Rai was brutallylathicharged and later on he died. This added to the anger and discontent ofBhagatand he was determined to kill the British official and Deputy InspectorGeneralScott responsible for the death of Lala Lajpat Rai. By mistake, hekilledassistant superintendent Saunders and ran from Lahore to escapepunishment. Hethrew a bomb in the Central Legislative Assembly on April 18,1929 and wassentenced to death on March 23, 1931.
