Amity School of Applied Sciences organized Seminar Series on Human Pluripotent stem cells: Technology Advances, Therapeutic Potential and Technological Challenges on 23rd Dec 2020.
The Main Objective of the event was to provide student should understand what are Stem cells and their main roles in the production of different organ systems in organisms. Types of stem cells on the basis of their potency. How to derive the iPSC lines with the karyotype analysis of the chromosomes. Biomedical applications of stem cells for treating diseases like Sickle cell anemia, etc.
Dr Arvind Chabbra, Professor and Director, Stem cell Institute,ASCI talked about human stems cells, technological advances, and therapeutic potential and technological advances. Students learnt about the stem cells, origin and formation of zygote in human beings. The human embryonic cells make the three layers that are ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm which basically help in the organ system formation. Embryonic cells have the ability to make the other parts of body so called as pluripotent stem cells. Students also learnt the concept of potency i.e. Totipotent, pluripotent, multipotent, oligopotent and unipotent. They understood about importance of adult stem cells which help to replace the old cells with new ones. Beside this they also got the idea of technology used to generate pluripotent stem cells. Stem cells are used to cure diseases like cancer and sickle cell anaemia and learnt many more applications.
Overall the seminar was very helpful and they acquired the information of stem cells and their applications.
