Geomaty 2008, Inter School Geography Competition organised at Amity International School Noida

GEOMATY 2008, an exclusive and novel brainchild of Dr. Amita Chauhan, Chairperson, Amity International Schools was held at Amity International School, Noida on 15th November 2008. A total of 275 students from 23 prestigious schools from Delhi and NCR participated in the competition for the Primary, Middle and Senior School levels for classes IV to X.

Last year, GEOMATY 2007 received overwhelming appreciation from the visiting schools. It was also the first ever inter-school Geography competition to be held and continues the tradition this year with GEOMATY 2008.This innovative contest was aimed at generating interest in Geography and the talent of map reading and interpretation.

This year, the GEOMATY challenge consisted of an oral presentation of Indian Tribes in terms of dress, language, culture, etc, a Geography written quiz as well as map reading, marking and identification. Creative talent spilled over and was amply displayed during the Poster Making segment. Scintillating questions from the allied subjects of Astronomy, Geomorphology, Climatology and Hydrology tickled the grey cells in the form of general awareness, crossword puzzles and jumbled words. Nifty PowerPoint presentations added originality, colour and technological expertise to the variegated subject matter that was presented. Original topics, such as the retreating Himalayan Glaciers, mountain activity, lessons to be learnt from the Kosi floods in Bihar, the upcoming DMRC or Metro Rail System in Delhi, disaster resistant construction, BRT controversy, eco-friendly bus fleet, major environmental issues, disaster management, etc. were only a few of the ‘mind-blowing’ topics covered. Two 15 minute movie presentations of the Andaman tribes and Indian culture were screened.

Prominent judges, Dr. Sudhanshu Singha,(Project Officer, British High Commission, Mrs. Ipminder Bedi, Lecturer, Mewar Institute, Mrs. Neeru Rao (from Delhi School of Economics), Mrs. Princey Kaul, a free-lace artist in Fine Arts, Ms. Suparna Soond, an accomplished danuse of Bharatnatyam, amongst others judged the event.

During the Valedictory Ceremony, the eminent judges lit the ceremonial lamp to invoke the blessings of the Almighty as the Amitasha Girls’ Choir lead by Mrs. Usha Mankotia gave a melodic rendition of the Shlok Gayan, “Om Hari Om.” Principal, Mrs. Mohina Dar gave a brief talk on the concept and purpose of GEOMATY 2008.

Dr. Sudhanshu Singha congratulated Amity for hosting such a unique inter-school competition that gave the subject of Geography it’s due importance. “Today, the contemporary issue is indeed global warming and the solution to this lies in Geograhpy.”

The Rolling Trophy was awarded to Amity International School, Saket while Amity, Noida bagged numerous prizes as well.

Mrs. Anjali Saxena, Event-in-Charge proposed the Vote of Thanks. Thus, Geomaty 2008 amply exemplified the Amitians’ constant endeavour to always forge a path of resolute determination and personal responsibility to go the distance in achieving all goals, thereby making their Founder President, Dr. Ashok K.
